I know some of the planelopnik folks hang around here, but since I don't have publishing rights there and this is haunting me I decided that I might as well give it a shot and ask here.
What on heaven's name is this bird?
Looks to me like a TU-144 modified to hell and back by the X planes program, but I'm not sure.

XB-70 Valkyrie.
You can view the only remaining one at the National Museum of the USAF. If you do not have base-access you will need to take the daily shuttles over the Presidential and R&D hangers. get there early to make sure you get a seat.
It's a damn impressive plane in person.

I love this plane so cool looking! I always wondered what it would look like in vietnam era SEA Camo or Euro1 from the '80s.

According to Google, it's just 23 hrs 32 mins from here... 22 hrs 20mins with no traffic.
Wonder if I can convince the wife to make a little road trip

Definitely Valkyrie. Crazy story about how the first one crashed...a cool concept that missed its window to succeed.

Plan on a 2 days to see everything. The main museum is 800,000 sq ft of display space. If you like to read, it will take you two days.
There is also America's Packard Museum in downtown Dayton. Worth the ~$10 admission to see an original Packard dealership and a really cool collection of older cars.
Take a week and drive out here for a few days. There is actually quite a bit to do around the Dayton area. I can point you in the right direction should you want more info. I live here, if you hadn't guessed. And I volunteer at the NMUSAF.

There were so many technologies from that era that missed their opportunity. So much awesome...

Seriously? I was there many years ago, and had no idea the XB-70 was there. It's an incredible museum.

They moved it onto the base to keep it inside. Once they finish the 4th hangar, it will be back with the rest of the off-base collection. Estimated completion in 2016, I think.

This is more than likely the first Valkyrie produced, as the second one had a mid-air collision in 1966. There were only two produced before cancellation.

It looks like a cross between an ugly dog and an ugly bird. Am I close?
